Drupal SEO Fundamentals

Drupal is arguably the best site framework for easily implementing effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies.

In this session, I will demonstrate how to use core modules, as well as a selection of contrib modules, to jump-start your SEO campaign.

WYSIWYG editors, and the modules that make them easy~ish

I'll walk you through how to get a wysiwyg editor up and running on your drupal site in a few simple steps. I'll cover the basics like how to get Bold and Italic buttons, and also more complicated things like in-line image placement. I also have few words for you on best practices around input filters and role-based usage.

My favorite combination of modules for setting up a WYSIWYG editor are:
WYSIWYG API (http://drupal.org/project/wysiwyg)
IMCE (http://drupal.org/project/IMCE)
IMCE WYSIWYG API bridge (http://drupal.org/project/imce_wysiwyg)

Drupal Efficiency

This session will address the decision points involved in developing and deploying Drupal for maximum efficiency. We'll discuss tools, techniques, and architectures to make the best use of your time and money. Novel approaches to common efficiency challenges in development and deployment will be demonstrated. Features technologies from Sun Microsystems: NetBeans, VirtualBox, OpenSolaris, Glassfish Webstack, plus cloud computing.

Socializing Your Web Using Open Authentication and mashups with drupal

This session will be divided in 2 parts:

Quality Assurance and Selenium Testing Framework with Drupal projects

Quality Assurance is Good for Business. But most of the times it is avoided to deliver product at competitive price. Contrib modules and themes can provide great advantage or great frustration to the end user. I'll discuss some standard and not-so-standard techniques that help ensure the delivery of quality Drupal sites that are a joy to use.

Agenda:

  • Why Quality Assurance is important?
  • Covering basics of Selenium Framework?
  • How to write tests and test suits using Selenium Framework.

Case Study: Using Drupal to Equip a News Site with Modern Tools (10am)

You don't have to start from scratch to build a powerful, modern Web site. In this session, we take you through the organizational planning and Drupal development work currently underway to upgrade the The Public Press web site into a modern news destination.

The Public Press (www.public-press.org) is a San-Francisco-based news organization that covers issue of importance to the SF Bay Area -- without accepting advertiser dollars. The site was originally built on Drupal 5 with a blog-like format. We'll give you a sneak peak at the upgraded Drupal 6 site, which goes far beyond.

Co-presenters:

Making Pages the Right Way: Panels Module and the End User

Panels 3 is a fantastic module (http://drupal.org/project/panels) that can allow a flexible, drag-and-drop interface for site layout and page construction. With an expanding set of "plugins" and tight integration with the Views 2 module, Panels can allow end users to quickly build and easily manage a complex Drupal site.

What semantic web technologies can do for you

With both Google and Yahoo's support of RDFa, the increasing use of topic hubs for SEO and the growing use of tools like Zemanta and Open Calais, publishers are realizing immediate value from semantic technologies today.

This session will introduce content delivery stake holders and developers alike to the principles behind semantic technologies and identify the ways these technologies can increase both short and long term value for publishers.

From acorn to oak: Climbing the Drupal learning curve

Getting involved with Drupal brings with it a significant initial learning curve. With Drupal there are so many possibilities which exist and more are available every day. So the challenge of how to 'tackle' your Drupal development effort is compounded by the matter of staying current with the ever changing Drupal world. Facing these conditions it's no wonder that many Drupalers feel like they frequently 'take one step forward and two steps back'...

In this session Caleb Gilbert, who came to Drupal four years ago knowing "just HTML" and is now very active in the Drupal community, and leads a multiperson development team for a large Drupal site, will share tools, tips, and experience which will help you manage your learning curve, rather than being managed by it.

Topics covered

The short-term, "getting starting":

  • Foundational things which no Drupalista should be without when making their climb
  • How to save time, and how not to waste it (closely related, but not always the same things)
  • Knowledge/tools/modules that are worth investing in short-term, and those that might not be
  • Long-term

  • How to plan for the ever-moving drop...new Drupal versions, new trends in contrib
  • What things are worth building a site with over the long-term (and what might be problematic)
  • What skills/knowledge will pay off the most for you in the long run?
  • Warner Bros. Records and Drupal!

Warner Bros. Records has been using Drupal to power all online efforts for over two years. In that time, we have taken Drupal from being a mere Open Source Application Framework to being a Web Platform that rivals systems costing hundreds and thousands of times more.

Drupal is now the root of technology within our company, helping us to break acts, make records, create great experiences for fans, and innovate.

In this session, I'll present some of the technical challenges we've faced along the way, including:

    • Deploying a multisite setup using a shared code-base with multiple cores and versions.
    • Establishing best practices for development workflow.
    • Performing database synchronizations between Dev and Prod sites.
    • Performance and optimization issues.
    • Aggregating data across multiple sites.

Despite the big name, the WBR Tech team is quite small (just 6 of us!) and we operate much like a startup. Come see what the fun is about!
